A fuel cell is an electrochemical conversion device that use fuels to produce a current in a closed cell, by consuming reactants.

The most commonly known type of fuel cells, react Hydrogen and Oxygen, to produce electricity and water as the only by product.

However there are several chemical combination that can produce electricity in a similar fashion.

Here's the best source for all such questions. Book mark it.

It's an impractical technology because of the expense of making the cells. It uses as much energy to make a cell as that cell will even save during its use.

It's a typical red herring in the energy debate, like ethanol. Neither solve the problem, both end up making bigger problems.

The real answers exist, but the danger is they won't allow oil companies to stay in charge of our government.

I would agree with the answer above, that this is economically a worthless technology. HOWEVER, academically, the advantage of a fuel cell is that it converts fuel to electricity at a much higher efficiency than is possible using any other technology.

The problem, of course, is that it uses fuel that we don't have. You don't just bore a hole in the ground and get hydrogen out. They don't make a fuel cell that runs on gasoline.
