In the movie "Iron Man", would it really be possible to build the kind of suits seen used in the movies. I would like the answers from people with experience in that kind of field.

Right Now in 2008 not likely...2028 maybe...but if you consider the way other things progress exponentially that suit might be old hat by then...We just need a good fuel source and a lightweight armor with a super guidance human interface ..Gosh that sounds easy to me...lets get going...Have a good one from the E..

No, on many counts. At least, not with any kind of technology we currently know of.
Some major strength enhancement is possible, but it would look more like the power loader Ripley used to fight the alien than a "skin-tight" suit like Iron Man. Rocket propelled boots would give you a flight range of about 50 feet and no control (I don't care how light the armor is - you still have to lift yourself, and there just isn't enough fuel there. Much larger JATO units have a burn time of about 2 seconds). And the armor wouldn't protect you from concussion (in fact, a concussion is exactly the same type of injury. Your brain, inside its bony armored skull, slams into the inside of the skull and is damaged). There are some pictures and videos of actual exoskeleton projects at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ4J69EEpu4 http://bleex.me.berkeley.edu/bleex.htm http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.01/ironmen.html?pg=2&topic=ironmen&topic_set= http://www.we.kanagawa-it.ac.jp/%7Eyamamoto_lab/pas/index.htm http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/oct05/1974 Notice they all have bulky power supplies. |

They're working on such things, but so far they're hardly as cool as something like Iron Man. I would doubt that such suits would ever do quite what Iron Man's have done, given the extensive poetic license required to make an entire comic series. However, a bionic suit that could take as much damage as a vehicle, sport an array of weapons, and fly? Sure, why not?
Attached is a link to a few programs ongoing in this field. Japan is really the forefront for a lot of robot and bionic work. However, they're not designing for military specs like the US is (as Japan still doesn't maintain a military as such). So they've got a suit that can help an old man lift 400 lbs, and it's going to be for.... nursing home folks. |
