I'm curious what they do other than sit around while the workers do the hard work.

We design the bridge, road, and railroad to ensure safety, room for expansion, maintenance. We grade it so it wont flood and be a smoothe ride. We have to make sure the paving surface is statically sound so it can handle the weight. We also design it to curve so drivers must stay awake. You are correct in the fact the workers do the hard work though, we just follow a manual of specifications these days.

They typically cover a large territory and may be responsible for dozens of bridges and hundreds of miles of track/roadbed.
. They would oversee maintenance, repair as well as the design and construction of new and/or upgraded facilities. In many cases, they would work with an outside engineering company that would have many more specialized resources (soil mechanics, grading, drainage, foundation, etc.) to oversee the design, construction or major maintenance efforts. |
