Today I got home from work and found out that we don't have heat in the house. I checked the water if it turns hot, it does, just a problem with the heater. What do I do? Who do I call? Are the people in Heating and Air Conditioning the right people to call? Is there anything I can do first before calling them? Help!

Sounds like the thermostat needs resetting, or the pilot light is out. Before you call a pro take a look at these to two sites to get acquainted with the way it works so that you are informed and can make educated decisions if you have to get a HVAC repairman pay your heater a visit. Note, hot water and central heat are two completely separate systems. If you don't have hot water, that's a water heater issue!
    Good luck!

The HVAC companies do that work all of the time. Is your unit, wood, coal, oil, electric or gas? If it's electric, the problem could be the circuit breaker in the panel or in the furnace itself. If you have a wood fired unit, put some wood in it. If it's a gas unit be sure the pilot light is on. If you had a gas flow interruption, the pilot light could be out. Also the gas unit may have a hot surface type igniter that may have failed. The newer gas furnaces also use a sensor to indicate a clear air flow and will not allow the unit to cycle and ignite if the air vent or exhaust is restricted. It could be many things, so call the HVAC company for a service call. That is their job.

    Simply,

    Not so fast.

It seems in the UK they have a lot of systems that use a boiler to heat water that is used for household heat. We are seeing them here too. With some the water heater goes through a radiator with a blower for the heat. Newer apartments here are using this system.

So you can't be sure of that statement of yours.

But it is hard to give an answer without knowing exactly what is being talked about.
